07/10/2004: "College Counselors at the trough?"
Apparently, teaching at an inner city school didn't merit the kind of attention that being a guidance counselor in a posh suburban high school does.
Colleges in their search for the best students are flying guidance counselors to their schools and then giving them tickets to sporting events among other things...
One purist notes in the article:
"Of course it's unethical...You want to be purer than Caesar's wife. When the trust isn't there, the counselor is useless. It's also a terrible misuse of funds. Think of the custodians who are barely making a living wage and the kids taking out bigger loans."
I have to agree. Even in a world of savvy consumers- ask any upper middle-class parent about their tenth or eleventh grader and they will have a lot to say- there's no real way of separating many of these colleges.
My small-but-deadly-liberal-arts-college offered a great experience. Any better than a dozen other schools- probably not... I picked it because it was in the midst of two great cities, it seemed like a mellow place, and I could get in. But that was after narrowing the list down from a number of VERY similar schools- supposing that list was narrowed for me by a guidance counselor with a particular interest...
My brother-in-law is applying to schools, and his criteria are simple:
1. in a BIG city
2. has a good history department and an urban studies program
There are some great schools that fit this bill- Penn, Columbia, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, University of Chicago, University of New Orleans- but a paid-for guidance counselor could seriously shape his options.
