Great letter from a parent living in Ardmore published Wednesday in the Inqy:
Public schools in Philadelphia are not the only places where kids do not come first in teacher assignments ("Kids' needs come first," Aug. 8). My (now adult) daughter was once in a lower math section and having trouble. The teacher was never available after school (he coached a sport) and blew her off when she was able to get to his office during the school day. After sitting with our daughter and coaching her through her homework assignments - and a failing quarter - her schoolteacher father and I allowed her to drop that class and make it up in summer school.
We later learned that the most capable teachers were routinely assigned the advanced placement and other upper-ability level classes, while the less able students got the less able teachers.
My daughter's school: Lower Merion High School.
What's so great about this letter is that it undermines all sorts of assumptions about suburban schools- they suffer from many of the same issues that plague urban schools; luckiliy, those schools do not have to deal with poverty, race, and with being Harrisburg's scapegoat for all the ills facing Philadelphia.
