09/22/2004: "Ah...Nevels bites back"
Problematic Article in today's Inqy on many, many levels.
1. The SRC wants it both ways- screw the union on health care AND seniority. If the SRC offered to continue benefits and a legitimate raise, it would split the union in half. Instead, Nevels, the strong defender of minority children, obvious from his career in investments, stakes out the position that the union is to blame.
2. And the union isn't blameless. The center city question throws the practices of the union into high relief- if the union actually worked to take care of minority children, than those parents would be standing behind them, ready to back a strike and take on the state. The reality is that most parents of public school children in Philadelphia have had multiple bad experiences with teachers and really couldn't care less if the union gets broken.
Jerald Podair's wonderful book- "The Strike that Changed New York" speaks directly to this question; by attacking community control, the UFT found themselves without parental allies by the mid 1970s and forced into a relationship with the financial elite of the city.
3. I love the survey offered by the Center City Corporation- click here for their 7 page report based upon conservative, anti-union research. The best part is the utter silence regarding race and poverty; don't pretend for a moment that center city parents are going to send their child to a school that is 90% African American. And don't pretend that the two to three public schools downtown don't feature highly politicized admissions practices.
