09/27/2004: "Puff piece in Inqy regarding Paul Vallas"
The Philly schools are much improved and Vallas is the reason, according to this miserably researched bit of propaganda in Sunday's paper.
A few of the problems within this article:
1. Just because the district declares that class size has been lowered doesn't mean that it has. Find me ten high school or middle school teachers who have less than 30 in their classes. I called my local schools- Lea, Wilson, and Drew- and all had at least 29 in their 5th grades.
2. Do some reporting please: the parent Snyder cites as supportive of Vallas is a parent of a child in a public school in Society Hill. Did you talk to her last week when you were covering the convention of upper middle class white folks talking about how to improve Center City Schools?
3. Funding for school construction is a matter of kissing John Perzel's ass. It's not a matter of balancing any sort of budget- needs are not going to be met within Philly schools. Nobody cares because poor children of color are the primary clients. Don't pretend there's any financial wizardry going on.
4. Improved test scores are easy; talk to any teacher in the district and they will tell you that the focus over the past couple of years has been on taking tests, bolstering attendance on test days, and streamlining curriculum so that the test is the sole focus. Tests aren't the answer.
5. Don't cite Eugene Hickok, former PA state official as an independent judge of Vallas' performance. This is the guy who presided over the draconian laws that have stripped the union of any real power, and who believes whole heartedly in the destruction of public education.
I could go on, but it's not worth it.
