11/23/2004: "Charter Schools"
Freaky story from the Times that highlights a number of issues:
1. It appears that the Department of Education was NOT going to release a study highly critical of charter schools.
From the Times:
"...the final report was delivered to the department in June, its authors said. The department did not make the 127-page report public until Friday afternoon, after The New York Times filed a Freedom of Information Request last month to obtain it."
Susan Aspey, a spokeswoman, said the department had released the report "as fast as we could."
Yeah right.
2. Paul Peterson, Harvard guy, defends the study, noting that charter schools are serving minorities and and are not creaming the best students off. On the other hand, have we calculated the amount of money flowing from public coffers into private hands with little accountability?
