12/03/2004: "Continued transit mess in Philly"
Philadelphia continues to struggle with the question of public transportation.
SEPTA is woefully underfunded and has been for years. The state legislature wants no part of paying to bail Septa out.
To make ends meet, SEPTA is going to raise fares and cut weekend service.
As with any government service that does not have a ready-made, politically active constituency, SEPTA is vulnerable to attacks. Most of the state reps could care less about SEPTA and the portion of the city reps who would just as soon have Northeast Philly secede are actively seeking to destroy it.
There's a newly formed advocacy group- the Philadelphia Transit Campaign that's pushing the governor to help out.
It'd be interesting to get a look at highway spending vs. public transportation statewide; even better would be a breakdown of federal grants and tax breaks around the two areas.
