The Washington Post has a running series on what they call the "Challenge Index."
This Index is computed as follows:
"The Washington Post Challenge Index measures a public high school's effort to challenge its students. The formula is simple: Divide the number of AP, IB or other college-level tests a school gave by the number of seniors who graduated in June."
I'm troubled by this idea, mostly as I've seen what happens when you create AP courses in a comprehensive high school, jam a bunch of kids into them, and then put out a series of press releases claiming your success in offering high level courses.
Wouldn't a weighted index, where you took the number of children who had 5s and counted them higher than the children who had 1s, make more sense and be more revealing?
