Story from North Carolina today describing the text used in one Christian academy.
Some appalling stuff, notably the excerpts from the book itself:
"Slavery as it existed in the South was not an adversarial relationship with pervasive racial animosity. Because of its dominantly patriarchal character, it was a relationship based upon mutual affection and confidence." (page 24)"
"There has never been a multi-racial society which has existed with such mutual intimacy and harmony in the history of the world." (page 24)
"Slave life was to them a life of plenty, of simple pleasures, of food, clothes, and good medical care." (page 25)
I can get behind reading different ideas and having students contrast different historical texts, but this is absolutely crazy. I'm not sure how to contend with it either, 'cause my bet is that most of these students are going to go to private, religious universities, where advanced, even scarier forms of these ideas will be taught.
