01/21/2005: "The so-called historical profession"
A friend pointed me towards this exchange between Bruce Kuklick and Leo Ribuffo as to the future of professional history.
Haven't fully processed yet, but I felt as though Kuklick is much more honest in his assessment; why are there more civil war re-enactors than there are professional historians? Why do so many Americans profess to love history, whether as Railroad buffs or World War II experts, while a basic understanding of the span of American history is so hard to come by?
