Easytree, home to a number of bittorrents, closed down yesterday after receiving a letter threatening litigation. Although they were scrupulous about banning torrents that featured music that had been officially released, apparently this was not enough to fend off the lawyers.
It's tricky stuff. I was mostly interested in Bob Dylan stuff, with the occasional Bruce or Emmylou torrent drawing my attention. With each of these artistis, I own everything they have officially released. I have their CDs, I have most of their work on LP, and I have a couple of official cassettes. I've paid countless dollars to see Dylan over the years, from four Summer shows in 1986 to a show last year at the Electric Factory ($65.) I have first editions of Tarantula and Chronicles and most of the commentaries...
How much more money do I owe Senor Dylan? Am I cheating him by listening to unofficial recordings of his shows? Do I undermine the entire recording industry by doing so, even though they have nothing left to sell me?
I think most folks who spend times gathering torrents are in the same position, so it's sad that the RIAA spends so much time chasing after them. On the other hand, it will be only a few days before another entity develops that will make these shows available...
