“there are so many charlatans in the world of education. They teach for a couple of years, come up with a few clever slogans, build their Web sites, and the lecture circuit.”

absolutely brutal truth! i bought "teachers have it easy" a few months ago but haven't had the stomach to crack it yet for fear of the above phenomenon.

though i must admit preferring that group charlatans to those who have slogans, websites, and the lecture circuit without any actual experience with kids.

That reminds me. I think I owe you about 6 dozen eggs, 16 loaves of bread, two quarts of mayonnaise and a gallon Worcestershire Sauce.

Greetings from an old Mac classmate - hope you're well.

Looks like it, actually - yr kids are divine!

I haven't read any of the above books, but I should.... en route to the library's website right now. My eldest is entering his sophomore year in high school and the younger one will be a third grader. Both were homeschooled for quite awhile... but that's another conversation, isn't it? I have links to Flickr, etc on my blog... where it's not really obvious what I do for a living. Basically, I do food systems, with a special emphasis on regional food banking. It's a long way from the music biz, but that, too, is another conversation.

Hope to hear from you eventually!

My cousin Lamar also sent this and called out the same quote. I found this to be validation of a big concern. When I told a family friend about our search for 4 Y old pre-school openings in St. Paul we got a huge lecture about the dangers of grade jumping. He'd been on the school board for 18 years and is wife was one of those AP tots back in the 50's. They agreed that it was a miserable sentence to place talented kids into older classes. When I explained that we actully had a city pre-school he ws relieved then asked, to the point of this article, if it was real Kindergarten or K-Prep with reading etc. We ended up elsewhere but this year I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that they were teaching 5 year olds to read and write at a level that was 1st grade stuff for me. Weare happy that the kid is an advanced, talented student but I felt that this was not fair to the kids hat were still socializing and for several, just learning english as a second language.
