{"id":2320,"date":"2017-01-29T22:28:45","date_gmt":"2017-01-30T02:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2320"},"modified":"2017-01-29T22:28:45","modified_gmt":"2017-01-30T02:28:45","slug":"humility-being-humbled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2320","title":{"rendered":"Humility; being humbled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a cool piece in the paper today about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/24\/magazine\/calling-yourself-humbled-doesnt-sound-as-humble-as-it-used-to.html\">original meaning of humility, of &#8220;being humbled.&#8221;  <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, while participating in a panel at Educon, I had talked about the necessity of humility in a teaching practice, particularly in terms of the mentoring relationship.  In some ways, humility is a necessity for a mentor teacher, because if you&#8217;re at all self-aware you&#8217;re going to be humbled by your students, usually in an embarrassing way and usually after you&#8217;ve just explained how you might approach curriculum (the kids hate it), management (the kids ignite something), community (a fight breaks out), deliberation (they start screaming), documentation (they submit blank papers).  You get the idea.   <\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing wrong with this as any teacher has good days and bad.
