{"id":2769,"date":"2017-10-15T13:44:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-15T17:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2769"},"modified":"2017-10-15T14:03:10","modified_gmt":"2017-10-15T18:03:10","slug":"teens-and-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2769","title":{"rendered":"Teens and anxiety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/11\/magazine\/why-are-more-american-teenagers-than-ever-suffering-from-severe-anxiety.html?_r=0\">this article<\/a> to be provocative and powerful.   <\/p>\n<p>This description of the impact of technology on teen anxiety was particularly telling: <\/p>\n<p>At a workshop for parents last fall at the NW Anxiety Institute in Portland, Ore., Kevin Ashworth, the clinical director, warned them of the \u201cillusion of control and certainty\u201d that smartphones offer anxious young people desperate to manage their environments. <strong>\u201cTeens will go places if they feel like they know everything that will happen, if they know everyone who will be there, if they can see who\u2019s checked in online,<\/strong>\u201d Ashworth told the parents. <strong>\u201cBut life doesn\u2019t always come with that kind of certainty, and they\u2019re never practicing the skill of rolling with the punches, of walking into an unknown or awkward social situation and learning that they can survive it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A quibble:  there&#8217;s three all of three paragraphs on the students I&#8217;ve taught in West Philly.   True, &#8220;addressing anxiety is low on the priority list in many economically disadvantaged communities&#8221; but that&#8217;s because more often than not, students, parents, and teachers are worried about basic needs being met, not because anxiety doesn&#8217;t exist.
