{"id":2838,"date":"2017-11-13T15:54:51","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T19:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2838"},"modified":"2017-11-13T15:54:51","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T19:54:51","slug":"talking-the-nature-of-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrclapper.com\/blog2\/?p=2838","title":{"rendered":"Talking the nature of government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We began by talking about why we have government.\u00a0 I tried to make a distinction between the philosophical issues that humans deal with in trying to form a government and the more practical issues.\u00a0 My directions weren&#8217;t that clear, I guess, as kids struggled to separate the two positions, but we had a rich conversation nonetheless:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philosophical : Why we do have a government?<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KH: \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a government because people are so power-hungry\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VG: \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decisions can be made more efficiently.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AG: \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solve problems for communities\u2026<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JM: \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JY: \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making sure that they know their laws \u00a0(and what laws should there be?) \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Practical:\u00a0 Why do we have a government?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CG: \u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government should solve problems.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is government made? \u00a0How is government organized?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes government good? \u00a0\u00a0Bad government?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are some systems better than others?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CG: \u00a0How should government redistribute money? \u00a0Wealth?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does government take care of everyone?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should benefit?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DW: \u00a0Redefine who receives benefits\u2026 and what benefits?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JY: \u00a0People aren\u2019t taking the laws into their own hands.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we help people understand the laws?<br \/>\n<\/span>How do people know the laws?<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who do the laws apply to?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JC: How do we share power? \u00a0People don\u2019t want to be controlled?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KH: Where do taxes go? Powerhungry people\u2026<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we make a government that represents us? \u00a0Our interests? \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MH: \u00a0\u00a0How do we deal with corruption? \u00a0\u00a0Inefficiency?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich people<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GW: \u00a0Limited government &#8212;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we make sure people have rights?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MH: \u00a0How do we make and maintain a good government?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TN: \u00a0\u00a0National disasters !!
