It&#8217;s used for closed range things and for linking things together.<\/p>\n<p>An em dash is the long dash.  Quoting from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dash\">wiki<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The em dash indicates a sudden break in thought\u00e2\u20ac\u201da parenthetical statement like this one\u00e2\u20ac\u201dor an open range (such as &#8220;John Doe, 1987\u00e2\u20ac\u201d&#8221;). The em dash is used in much the way a <a title=\"Colon (punctuation)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colon_%28punctuation%29\">colon<\/a> or set of <a title=\"Parentheses\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parentheses\">parentheses<\/a> is used: it can show an abrupt change in thought or be used where a <a title=\"Full stop\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Full_stop\">period<\/a> is too strong and a <a title=\"Comma (punctuation)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comma_%28punctuation%29\">comma<\/a> too weak. Em dashes are sometimes used in lists or definitions, but this is not considered correct usage<sup class=\"noprint\" title=\"The text in the vicinity of this tag needs citation.\">[<a title=\"Wikipedia:Citing sources\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Citing_sources\"><em>citation\u00c2\u00a0needed<\/em><\/a>]<\/sup>: a <a title=\"Colon (punctuation)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colon_%28punctuation%29\">colon<\/a> should be used instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Man, writing is hard.
