John Kerry re-emerges with a new plan:
"Contract with America's Middle Class."
Appropriate rhetoric, reasonable plan (cut mc taxes, support tuition and health care payments) but this is the best phrase the braintrust could think of ? Not only does it appear to be a copy of the "Contract with America" but it fails to offer any sort of flow. Who's gonna say, "hey man, did you hear about that Contract with America's Middle Class that guy Kerry discussed?"
It's important- because almost everybody claims a middle class identity regardless of income. And these are the folks who have significant entitlements that are essentially hidden- mortgage deductions being the most important. So they won't go for a program- a contract is on the right track- but how do you describe it?
Other ideas, some good, some not so good:
Middle Class Payback
Rebuild the Middle Class (too negative, i.e., who admits to needing rebuilding)
Middle Class Roadmap (won't work in policy circles as it'll resonate with that other roadmap, but how many Americans really care about the Middle East?)
Need to think about this some more, but then, so does the Kerry leadership team.
