Here's a story from Denver, where the union has agreed, or at least 59% of the union has agreed, to linking student performance to their salary. The good news is that the top end of their salary increases; the bad news is that some sort of slippery system will be used to evaluate their student performance.
In most schools and most districts, the possibility of a consistent, accurate evaluation of student performance is highly unlikely.
As noted in the article:
"For the plan to work, a committee of school and union officials still must agree on flexible and yet fair standards for setting classroom goals — a detail that was essentially sidestepped during the pilot."
I have no idea how they will manage this process. How do you deal with the variation among students-do they really have the resources to set up an accurate "value-added" program?
Finally, one particularly bright teacher offers the following statement:
"More importantly, I felt this is such a fair way to pay teachers... it's so appealing because it makes me work harder."
And folks wonder why teachers don't get any respect.
