05/13/2004: "Martin Luther King High School"
MLK high school is an enormous comprehensive high school opened in the Olney neighborhood of the city in 1971. With hideous, defensive architecture, King has long been a troubled site. If I remember correctly, King was always on the shortlists for "Keystoning" and has become a school under the control of Foundations, Inc. This non-profit, mostly thanks to the largesse of Dwight "I care about public education so much I want to make it private" Evans, has control over five schools right now. In an attempt to wrest control of the teaching staff away from the PFT, they are seeking to make King a charter school next year.
Get it? Charter school= no labor rules, no worries about a 130 page contract, no committment to anything other than a bottom line.
Get it? Foundations somehow believes that there are 70+ teachers who cannot wait for the opportunity to teach in a charter school with no job protection and a student body accustomed to chaos...
