One of the earliest post-Brown struggles in Philadelphia emerged at the gates of Girard College. This boarding school for orphans was in the midst of a changing neighborhood, and was the site of a number of protests beginning in the 1950s. There's a piece in today's Inquirer about one of the first black graduates.
I was reading Jack Dougherty's book, More Than One Struggle: The Evolution of Black School Reform in Milwaukee, and one of the things he emphasizes is the multi-layered forms of protest in Northern cities. It was rarely about a single objective; in this case, activists sought integration into Girard College while simultaneously advocating for Afrocentric curriculum.
