06/08/2004: "The Joy of the Survey"
Spending most of my time getting ready to teach the survey to 14 odd college students for Penn's summer session II. I love the idea of a survey, these courses that actually attempt to cover a sweep of material. Who wouldn't want to take a class like:
The 20th Century American novel
History of the United States since the Civil War
Modern European History
or the like. It's your chance to get it all, to argue in broad sweeps, to try and make sense of the Great Deal in light of the Great Society, to measure social movements against each other, to try and figure out what work meant over an extended period of time. All these grand questions that ought to be of such concern for any thinking person....
The other great thing about these classes is that they actually focus on what happened. Graduate courses focus on how events were reported and how interpretations have changed. High level seminars focus on tight content bundles with an eye towards the historiography.
For my aching social conscience- I miss teaching at West Philly High- you can also make a case that the survey is your one chance to get folks excited about history in a way that matters, in a way that produces genuine civic engagement.
