06/08/2004: "AC or not"

There's a story in today's inqy about the lack of air-conditioning in most Philadelphia schools and the needless suffering of students who will attend summer school.

My classroom during my last two years was on the third floor of a building constructed in 1911. During the winter, the forced air heat was such that I rarely wore more than a short-sleeved shirt. During the fall and spring, the room regularly cleared 95 degrees.

No learning takes place when it's that hot. It doesn't. We can all pretend that a fan here and there will help, that a good teacher makes the best of a bad situation, but let's be honest- it's a waste of time and money to ask children and teachers to battle those conditions.
